Extreme Beauty Testing: Waterproof Makeup

Our makeup can go through a tough old time trying to stay put. From poolside holidays and seaside frolics to sweltering tube journeys and humid temperatures, this time of year calls for waterproof makeup to be added to your washbag to ensure your face stays in tact all day (and night) long.

So, we took it upon ourselves to pour buckets of water over our heads to see which waterproof products really truly stand the test of time. Here's what happened...

We tried: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Heather, £19.50, Clarins Truly Waterproof Mascara, £21.50 and Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner, £16

'The eyeshadow had a really creamy and rich formula which means you can build good coverage to rival a non-waterproof formula. In terms of staying power, it didn't move an inch!

I was far more dubious about the eyeliner as from experience, on contact with even a droplet of water it tends to steam down your face but Smashbox had my back. It has a beautiful pigment to it and was really easy to apply. Once being drenched with water, it stayed and stayed despite a vigorous rub test.

My pet hate for waterproof mascaras is the crumbly fallout you usually get if you touch your lashes after them getting drenched. Luckily, this Clarins mascara left my lashes jet black, voluminous and with no crumbly residue or smudging!'

We tried: MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set, £13.05 and Models Own Cream Eyeshadow in Sea Nymph, £6.99

'The Models Own eyeshadow stayed on like a dream - even after a few rubs of the eye it went nowhere and the pigment remained a bright mermaid blue. My brows also stayed in perfect form with not a hair out of place thanks to MAC and Icano Milano's Emotion Allowed Mascara does what it says on the label - in fact, I think it would even withstand watching The Notebook!'

We tried: Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara, £19, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Colour, £16 and Laura Geller Waterproof Eye Spackle in Mauve Majesty, £21

'The eyebrow pen took a little getting used to as I'm used to using a pencil, however it stayed put through a ton of water and my eyebrows still seemed in place at the end. The eyeshadow was a lovely mauve/pink colour which would be great as a base for everyday or if you want the full waterproof effect for a festival. It also didn't seem to budge one little bit. The mascara made my lashes super volumous and not a panda eye in sight - definitely one to slick on before plunging yourself into a swimming pool!'
