Hats are a clever little accessory. They have the ability to instantly add a bold statement to a pared-back outfit, can hide your locks if they're a tad on the greasy side and can give your barnet a little extra protection from wind, rain and the like.
But whether you're more of a Fedora kinda gal or tend to opt for a cosy bobble, playing up your cosmetics palette to match your hat is just the trick to pull your look together. Yes, it may sounds a little silly, but trust us on this one. It's just about making sure everything is in sync.
While you can get away with pretty much anything when it comes to a black hat, if you're opting for a brown number then dusting a little bronze shadow over your lids and slicking some brown or nude lipstick on your pout just makes your whole look pack a cool, coordinated punch.
To give you a little inspiration (and to show you we're not totally crazy) here are five makeup looks we're matching to our favourite hats...
Camel fedora
A 'burnt orange' shadow swept over your eyelids and a dark brown lipstick create the perfect palette when it comes to a camel coloured Fedora. We went for NARS Eyeshadow in Persia,
£18 and MAC Lipstick in Paramount,
£15.50.
We love: ASOS Fedora Hat With Skinny Snake Chain,
£22Navy boater hat
To accompany this navy boater hat, we opted for sun-kissed cheeks and an inky black feline flick. A red wine lip pulls the look together, and this NARS Lipstick in Afgan Red,
£21, is a colour match to deep red band on the hat.
We love: ASOS Felt Boater Hat,
£22Khaki bobble hat
Pink is the perfect hue to compliment a khaki green hat, so we paired our favourite bobble with a dash of pretty pink lipstick - Maybelline's Lipstick in Summer Pink,
£6.99 makes for the ideal shade. A flush of pink blush across your cheeks courtesy of Paul & Joe Face Colour in Candy,
£12, adds a finishing touch.
We love: Miss Guided Pom Pom Hat in Khaki,
£10Black bandana
Although not a hat, bandanas are all the rage at the moment and are a great way to cover un-styled locks or simply add something a little more statement to your look. We kept our makeup pretty pared-back but bold red lipstick added the perfect dash of colour.
We love: ASOS Star And Paisley Bandana,
£6Charcoal floppy hat
A floppy hat makes such a statement that a soft smokey eye and a nude lip are all you need to bring the look together.
We love: ASOS Felt Floppy Hat,
£22
